U-bolts have primarily been used to support pipework through which fluids and gasses pass.
As such, U-bolts are traditionally measured using pipe-work engineering speak, i.e. nominal Bore, which relates to the internal diameter of the pipe it is supporting.
U bolts can also be used in a variety of other applications particularly in building and construction U Bolts are especially useful in a vertical application, clamping timber or sheet to an upright post.
Square U bolts can be used to clamp to square or rectangular box section.
